子贡曰：“如有博施于民而能济众，何如？可谓仁乎？”子曰：“何事于仁，必也圣乎！尧、舜其犹病诸！夫仁者，己欲立而立人，己欲达而达人。能近取譬，可谓仁之方也已。”

Zigong said: "If someone is generous to the people and can help the masses, how is that? Can it be called benevolence?"

Confucius said: "What is the matter with benevolence? It must be a saint! Yao and Shun were bothered by it! The benevolent person establishes others when he wants to establish himself, and achieves others when he wants to achieve himself. If he can use a metaphor close to him, it can be called the way to benevolence."

子貢曰く、如し博く民に施して能く衆を済ふことあらば、何如。仁と謂うべきか。子曰く、何ぞ仁にとどまらん。必ずや聖か。尭舜もそれ猶諸を病めり。それ仁者は己立たんと欲して人を立て、己達せんと欲して人を達す。能く近く譬を取るを、仁の方と謂うべきのみ。
