Shandong province in East China steadfastly pursued high-level environmental protection in the past year to support its high-quality development, achieving remarkable progress in pollution prevention and control as well as in enforcing the law on ecological conservation, according to the Report on the State of Ecology and Environment in Shandong Province for 2024.

The report was released at a press conference organized by the Information Office of the Shandong Provincial People's Government on June 4.

In terms of air quality, the proportion of days for excellent air quality across the province throughout the year averaged 72.2 percent in 2024, marking a 5.9 percentage point increase compared to the previous year. The average PM2.5 concentration in the province was 35.5 micrograms per cubic meter, showing a 1.9 microgram per cubic meter improvement year-on-year, reaching the best level recorded in history.

In 2024, 79.1 percent of the 153 sampled surface water sections in the province met the criteria for excellent water quality. The offshore waters of the province displayed a 93.6 percent rate of good water quality, exceeding the national average by nearly 10 percentage points.

The province maintained stable levels of environmental ionizing radiation in 2024. Monitoring data for gamma radiation air absorption rates around key nuclear projects were all within normal ranges.

In response to climate change, Shandong implemented the Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan 2035 and initiated activities such as carbon monitoring pilot program.
