As we observe World Biodiversity Day, Taishan Mountain stands as a significant example of ecological progress — a transformation achieved through years of dedicated conservation.

By 2025, Taishan Mountain had recorded over 3,000 insect species, including more than 900 newly documented ones— among them, five new to China and 92 new to Shandong province.

Insects are a sensitive indicator of ecological health. With a forest coverage rate of 94.8 percent and vegetation cover exceeding 95 percent, Taishan Mountain is an ideal habitat for diverse insect life. These outcomes are the result of nearly 30 years of sustainable forest management and pest control efforts.

The bird community is also flourishing. In 2025, the first recorded appearance of a black eagle at Taishan Mountain brought the total number of wild bird species to 376 — a significant increase from 148 species in 1995.

In terms of endemic species protection, the Taishan Mountain ash tree was once critically endangered, with only one surviving individual. It has now been successfully propagated, with over 2,000 cultivated and reintroduced into the wild. Other rare plants, such as Taishan willow, are also included in conservation and propagation efforts.

Since the launch of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–25), the scenic area has advanced ecological governance, scientific monitoring, and public participation, promoting modern forestry and the construction of a beautiful Taishan Mountain. In 2026, the mountain will continue to develop the national ecological quality comprehensive monitoring station and publish educational books on birds, insects, and butterflies, helping more people discover the ecological beauty of this UNESCO World Heritage site.
