宰予昼寝，子曰：“朽木不可雕也，粪土之墙不可杇也，于予与何诛？”子曰：“始吾于人也，听其言而信其行；今吾于人也，听其言而观其行。于予与改是。”

Zai You slept during the daytime. Confucius said, "Rotten wood cannot be carved; dirty earth cannot be used for cement: why bother scolding him? At first I used to listen to what people said and expect them to act accordingly. Now I listen to what people say and watch what they do. I learned this from You."

宰予、昼寝ぬ。子曰く、朽木は雕るべからず、糞土の牆は朽すべからず。予に於いてか何ぞ誅めん。子曰く、始め吾、人に於けるや、その言を聴きてその行ひを信ぜり。今吾、人に於けるや、その言を聴きてその行ひを観る。予に於いてか是を改む。
