子张问明，子曰：“浸润之谮，肤受之愬，不行焉，可谓明也已矣；浸润之谮、肤受之愬不行焉，可谓远也已矣。”

Zi Zhang asked about the meaning of "enlightenment". Confucius said, "One who does not experience the permeation of slander and who is not agitated by accusations can certainly be called 'enlightened'. Indeed, such a person may be called 'transcendent'."

子張、明を問う。子曰く、浸潤の譖り、膚受の愬え、行われざるを明と謂うべきのみ。浸潤の譖り、膚受の愬え、行われざるを遠と謂うべきのみ。
