A group of international students studying in Jinan city, East China's Shandong province celebrated the upcoming Dragon Boat Festival by trying their hand at traditional bamboo weaving and exploring folk culture at the city's Baihuazhou Historical and Cultural Block on May 27.
The Dragon Boat Festival, or Duanwu Festival, is a traditional Chinese event celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month in Chinese calendar and this year it falls on May 31.
The festival is marked by various customs such as making zongzi, a traditional Chinese delicacy made of glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo leaves and holding dragon boat races. Among the great traditions is the practice of hanging small woven bamboo boats filled with mugwort leaves to ward off evil and to wish for good health.
