Peak harvest season has arrived for Renfeng watermelons in Jiyang district of Jinan, highlighting the region's progress in developing high-quality agriculture and rural vitalization. The signature crop has grown into a pillar industry with an annual output value exceeding 600 million yuan ($87.82 million).
The success of Renfeng watermelons stems from the shift from traditional farming to modern, technology-driven cultivation. In high-standard greenhouses, the melons are grown using vertical cultivation to maximize sunlight and ventilation. The process emphasizes ecological safety, relying on honeybee pollination instead of hormones and using physical and biological methods to control pests. Combined with precision irrigation and nutrient management, the fruit consistently reaches a sugar content of over 14 percent, giving it a crisp, juicy taste and helping it earn recognition as a nationally recognized geographical indication agricultural product.
To promote standardized production, Jiyang has organized individual farmers into specialized cooperatives. The model has helped establish a complete industrial chain that integrates technical services, cold-chain logistics, and diversified sales channels, including livestreaming and group buying.
The thriving industry has brought tangible benefits to local residents. Renfeng town now operates more than 4,000 specialized greenhouses, supporting the livelihoods of thousands of farmers. The sector has raised the average per-capita income by more than 10,000 yuan, while individual households have seen average earnings increase by over 30,000 yuan per year.
